Abstract:This research investigates the opacity of mid-atomic-number elements in high-energy-density (HED) plasmas, a fundamental parameter governing radiation energy transfer in stellar interiors and inertial confinement fusion. Currently, the immense complexity of atomic process calculations forces approximations in radiative transfer models, contributing to theoretical inaccuracies such as the disagreement between solar models and helioseismic observations. To address this, we are developing a novel opacity measurement platform at the GEKKO XII laser facility. Because physical HED experiments are highly resource-intensive, we require high-performance computing allocations to conduct rigorous, high-fidelity numerical simulations. These intensive computations are essential to accurately resolve the complex atomic processes, validate the platform's design, and optimize parameters prior to experimental execution.
